Pierre et Jean

The story is about two brothers who are very different from one another. From the color of hair, to behaviour and ambition.

But this difference, this unbalance has been asleep and consuled for many years. Untill the younger brother, John, inherits a considerable amount of money from a family friend.
Safe to say Pierre is devestated, he feels like his brother is not entitled to accept it from a stranger. At first, he tries to benefit from his brother wealth, but he feels left behind, in fact so much behind he can't catch up. So when a random girl suggest his brother might be the son of the family friend instead of his father, he is torned between relife and horror. One one hand he feels soothed that his brother's luck has nothing to do with Pierre's lack of worth but on the other he sees his mother entirely different.
The pure image of motherhood is shattered in his mind , he feels betrayed, turning bitter and harsh towards his family. This distaste extends to all women in his mind.

But I think in the end, the question is about benefits as much it has to do with morals. Jean, now wealthy and soon to be married to a beautiful woman , found it much easier to forgive his mother while Pierre was forced to choose a life distant from his family and felt cast out.

The author also pictures a struggle between nature and nurtur. Are the genes solely responsible for what happens in life? I don't think so. Yes I was sad for Pierre but I also felt he did little to save his neck and improve himself as a person. He spent most of his days hanging out in cafes, relying on his family to support him. His ambitions didn't quite match his behaviour.
But all said, I liked how well described the story was. Even if it was a short one, I could relate with characters well. The ending though was a tad bit dissapointing, or maybe much like actual life.
